what to say when someone is yelling at you

Hey Reader,

Someone just yelled at you.

But you’re not sure how to handle it without escalating the situation.

Here’s 3 simple ways to respond:

1: Set a volume boundary.

Instead of yelling back, calmly use the phrase, “I don’t respond to that volume.”

This lets them know they’ve hit a boundary. And you don’t allow people to talk to you that way.

2: Lower your tone.

Respond in a tone that’s even quieter than your normal speaking voice.

When you lower your volume, you appear more in control and make them sound less controlled. So to match you, it pulls their volume back down.

3: Speak slowly and confidently.

The slower you speak, the more you take back control.

One trick is to add pauses around verbs, especially around key words like “respond.” For example, “I don’t respond to that volume.”

Use these tips the next time someone yells at you.

They’ll help you turn the conversation back to being calm and respectful.

P.S. The slower you speak, the more confident you will sound. Let your breath be your first word. You got this :)

You give it five or ten seconds of silence and then look at them as if, “Is that really what you’re going to ask me?” Trust me. The silence is going to say more than...
